Linux Kernels 4.11.7 and 4.9.34 LTS Bring AMDGPU Improvements, Updated Drivers

Renowned Linux kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman announced the availability of two new stable kernels updates, for the Linux 4.11 and 4.9 LTS series.

Linux kernels 4.11.7 and 4.9.34 LTS are now the latest builds of their respective branches, bringing lots of improvements, security fixes, and updated drivers. According to their appended shortlogs (here and here), Linux kernel 4.11.7 changes a total of 103 files, with 1039 insertions and 784 deletions, and Linux kernel 4.9.34 LTS changes a total of 85 files, with 447 insertions and 313 deletions.

“I’m announcing the release of the 4.11.7 [and 4.9.34] kernel. All users of the 4.11 [and 4.9] kernel series must upgrade. The updated 4.11.y [and 4.9.y] git tree can be found at: git:// linux-4.11.y and git:// linux-4.9.y,” says Greg Kroah-Hartman in the mailing list announcements.

AMD GPU and Intel i915 improvements, updated drivers and architectures

Looking at the appended shortlogs for each kernel release, we can notice that they both include pretty much the same changes. For example, there are various improvements to the support for the ARM, MIPS, PowerPC (PPC), ARC, FR-V, PA-RISC, s390, SH, TILE, SPARC, Xtensa, and x86 hardware architectures, as well as to the Btrfs, F2FS, Hugetlbfs, and Configfs filesystems.

Besides the usual core kernel and mm changes, both Linux 4.11.7 and 4.9.34 LTS kernels updated numerous drivers, in particular the AMDGPU, Intel i915, USB, TTY, MFD, InfiniBand, CPUFreq, PHY, and Virtio ones. The networking stack also received improvements to the mac80211 wireless framework and the IPv6 implementation. An SELinux fix is also available in Linux kernel 4.11.7.

All users of GNU/Linux distributions powered by a kernel from either the Linux 4.11 or 4.9 LTS series are urged to update to versions 4.11.7 or 4.9.34 as soon as these are available from the stable software repositories. OS integrators are also urged to update their systems by downloading the Linux kernel 4.11.7 and Linux kernel 4.9.34 LTS source tarballs from .
